FILM INTRO

04/14

Below is the intro we have filmed. (Edit: During editing Carlos mistakenly put my name is Andres Pradilla when my last name is actually Padilla.) Either way enjoy!

I would like to extend my thanks to Keon Campbell, Sebastian Sanchez, and Gianni Palermo for acting in our film intro and for the great job they did.

Below I have attached my Creative Critical Reflection of the development of our film intro, "Don't Move." I also want to give a shoutout to Keon Campbell (who plays Kahlil in the intro), Sebastian Sanchez (who plays Vince), and Carlos' brother Andres who helped us out in filming this intro. I also want to thank Geo and Carlos for their contribution to the intro as it came out pretty great and I am excited for everyone to see it.

Editing process: First Mistake Found

04/09

As we are mid way into editing, we have found a problem. We had planned on opening the intro by using some sound elements with a knife and a knife block. However, we are not able to find the footage within the other shots we took. So we may need to reshoot that scene with the same lighting to have continuity.

Production Process Updates!!

04/07

As of Saturday, April 7th,  we are done with the shooting and are beginning to enter the editing process. We assume that we will finish prior to Wednesday, April 11th, in order to give us time to watch the intro in its entirety and give us enough time to hopefully make corrections if necessary before the deadline. As we enter this stage, I'd like to speak on mistakes we have made. We had to shoot some scenes several times due to the lack of lighting. We eventually learned from those mistakes by finding different ways to light the scene and manipulate the brightness by diffusing the light source with paper towels and even using a reflector. I will keep you guys updated if there happens to be any mistakes or changes that we run into whilst we begin the editing process.

Character Update

04/06

As I had said in the post before, our main character now has a name: Kahlil Parker. His characterization remains the same but we have also finished the characterization of his friend, Vincent Montgomery, and the two police officers, Officer Chase and Officer Murphy.

  • Vincent: (nicknamed Vince) He is characterized as a mischievous 18 year old, caucasian male. He is best friends with Kahlil despite Kahlil's mom prohibiting their friendship as Vince is a bad influence.

  • Chase: The racist, profiling cop who is characterized by his aggressiveness. Older caucasian male.

  • Murphy: The polar opposite of Chase. More understanding towards the kids, although he works under Chase's authority. Younger caucasian man.

Script process FINALIZED!

04/04

Over the past weeks, I have begun writing the script and developing the characters that will appear. Below I have provided a link to see the article in it's entirety as I have added directors comments dedicated to setting the scenes and character behaviors. However, it was not finalized until last week as we had to cut out several scenes and character dialogue as it would not fit our 2 minute limit. This then did make it easier for us to cut down on dialogue and cutting out the parent characters, reducing our need to cast actors for those scenes. Within the script I was able to fit foreshadowing and certain symbolism as a result of the cut out parts, thus making the atmosphere of the intro more cohesive.

Mise-en-scene choices

03/30

As we develop the characters more and more, we have begun to construct images of how the characters dress and behave, their morals and thoughts. As we begin, we looked back at how our lead character was inspired, and based his looks off of that. We did imagine an African American teen who dresses in a skater type fashion but does not behave in the typical rebellious teen way. Instead he is a shy, good mannered kid who only wants to do good by his family and achieve his goals. As for his best friend (and troublemaker), we too opted for the skater look, but through his reckless demeanor and dialogue, the audience can infer that he will be the cause to their demise. We also believed that his parents should show the hard working aspect of the lower middle class family, so they are not too flashy, but are instead good loving parents who show determination and hard work. We also felt as if the beginning of the intro should have a light hearted mood similar to FX's "Atlanta." This was then going to shock the audience more as they are then presented with an injustice at the hands of a police officer. A posting will be done later on to demonstrate how the costume choices were finalized and the outcome.

Possibility of Music appearing?

03/28

After discussion with my group, we thought that perhaps some non-diegetic music could appear in the scene to add a bit ambiance to the scenes. At first we thought that perhaps a snipped of Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?" might be good to add to the feel of the scenes. However, we opted to create some music as getting a hold of the artists and the labels have been difficult after several emails. This even prompted me to create a bit of dialogue to further the relationship between the lead character and his father through the music, in a sort of new school vs. old school type of way. I will soon post a short sound clip of the audio to demonstrate how it will sound as we thought a scary, soulful type sound will suit the tone well.

Update on Production

03/27

As the script has been almost finished at about 4 pages, I wonder if the content is far too greater than the time we have allotted. I feel as if we do not have enough background on the character to create the bond with the audience, but I feel as if what we have is good enough to be paired with the severity of the scene that can create that bond. Nonetheless I will create an update post detailing snippets of the script I enjoy personally, and explain specific motifs and allusions.
